On 26 September 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defence Forces, was the officer on duty at the bunker near Moscow which housed the command centre of the Soviet early warning satellites, code-named Oko.
Shortly after midnight, the bunker's computers reported that intercontinental ballistic missiles were heading toward the Soviet Union from the United States. Effectively, the Soviet Union was being informed that World War 3 had started.
Petrov suspected that the computer system was malfunctioning, despite having no other source of information to confirm his suspicions and after several tense minutes, chose to disregard his orders and chose not to issue a counter strike.
Petrov saved the world in 1983 but was dismissed from his position for disobeying orders.
